Calen
Uhlig began his musical education at an early age,
plinking out melodies by ear on a toy piano. Long before recorder
lessons in grade school began, he taught himself to play a small,
ceramic ocarina he picked up at a Saturday Market in Portland.
Eventually, the recorder
led to the clarinet (much to his schoolmates' chagrin, he was always
first chair even though he never brought his instrument home to
practice). In middle school, he switched to tenor saxophone, then
to baritone sax in high school. By the time he graduated, he'd added
the stringed bass to his instrumental repertoire.
These days, Calen knows
the value of the woodshed, filling the majority of his free time
with one band practice or another, when not onstage proving he still
has that finely-tuned ear, which he also puts to use as a soundman
for his own and other musical acts.
Starting out with Bond
Street while still in middle school, Calen began his full-time tenure
with the band as a sophomore. Since then, he's added to his well-deserved
fan base (made up of musicians and audience members alike) via performances
with The Function, the Heather Christie Band, The North Coast Big
Band, North Coast Symphonic Band, Beefsteak Mine, The Big Fish Blues
Band, Bulldog Rhythm Review, the Cindy Pearson Band, Steve Einhorn
and Kate Power, and Dave Drury.
Currently (Spring 2007),
while a fulltime engineering student, Calen continues to play baritone
sax for Bond Street, and bass for Caravan
Gogh, Everyday
People, and Amy
Keys Jazz Band. Occasionally he takes the bass spot in place
of his dad, Bill, for the Floating
Glass Balls.
